Protect your hearing and be listening to your favourite sounds for years
While hearing loss can occur at any age and particularly as you grow older, there are many ways to protect your hearing in everyday situations. Think about turning down the volume on your stereo, TV or ipod, and wearing ear plugs or ear defenders when using noisy equipment like lawn mowers or even the household kitchen blender.
Every assault on your ear drums is effectively adding to your future potential hearing loss.

Practical measures to protect your hearing
Preventative measures to stop further hearing loss include:
- wearing earplugs or ear defenders when using noisy equipment
- musicians' earplugs - maintain frequency response while reducing sound to safe levels, so there's no more muffled souding music and no more ringing ears
- in-ear monitors - clearly hear what you're playing on stage and not damage hearing
- snore plugs - for the snorer and anyone around them.
All the above can be obtained through Kapiti Hearing.
If you think you have significant hearing loss already, a diagnostic hearing test can be done to see if you need a hearing aid.
Signs and symptoms of hearing loss
There are many varied symptoms of hearing loss including:
- difficulty hearing conversations particularly when there is a lot of background noise - like in a car or a restaurant
- feeling that everyone is mumbling as words don't sound clear anymore
- asking people to repeat what they've just said
- having the TV or radio louder than anyone else in the house likes it
- tinnitus - ringing, hissing, buzzing noises in your ears.
If you have concerns, book an appointment at Kapiti Hearing for a full hearing test to ascertain if you need a hearing aid.
